'Call Me Baby': How Talking Sex Dolls Fill a Void in China

Dalian: With China facing a massive gender gap and a greying population, a company wants to hook up lonely men and retirees with a new kind of companion: "Smart" sex dolls that can talk, play music and turn on dishwashers.

Rows of voluptuous silicon bodies hang in the warehouse of EXDOLL, a firm based in the northeastern port city of Dalian, but engineers are also working on bringing them to life.

A programmer in a lab coat asks a petite blonde prototype sitting on a chair and dressed in a see-through white blouse: "What is your name?"


"My name is Xiaodie but you can also call me baby. But if I'm not happy I won't answer," the robotic voice says through a speaker, though its lips do not move.

EXDOLL has ambitions to apply artificial intelligence to make dolls so life-like that they could cure loneliness among the country's singletons and care for the elderly and handicapped.

There are 33.6 million more men than women in the country of 1.4 billion people.

The gap is attributed to China's former one-child policy and a traditional preference for sons, which has led to selective and illegal abortion. Some 114 boys are born for every 100 girls, far above the global average.

China also has a rapidly ageing population, which is putting strains on the healthcare and social welfare system.

Seated between two non-robotic silicon companions, one in a short black skirt and a smaller model in a schoolgirl outfit, marketing director Wu Xingliang said his company's products could solve the country's major social problems.

"China has a shortage of women, and this is a factor in why there's this demand, but they're not just for sex," Wu, whose customers include single young and older men but also married ones, told AFP.

"We're designing them so they can have meaningful conversations with you and help with chores around the house. They could eventually even work as medical assistants or receptionists," Wu said.

'Hottest body'
Xiaodie is essentially a sex doll fitted with a wifi function similar to the iPhone's Siri application, which can surf the internet and respond to voice commands.

It can turn home appliances that are connected to the wifi on and off.

Users can control the 25,000 yuan ($4,000) doll with a phone app or by giving it oral instructions -- much pricier than the traditional sex dolls that the company sells for as little as 2,500 yuan.

In the next year, EXDOLL hopes to roll out more advanced robots featuring artificial intelligence technology, complex facial expressions and body movements, voice recognition systems and eyes that can follow people's movements.

The programmers pore over 3-D models on computer screens while another one assembles a skeleton with exposed wires and joints -- reminiscent of the white droids in the Will Smith sci-fi film "I, Robot".

The machine becomes more lifelike as he gingerly affixes a silicon skin -- handpainted in sultry makeup colours -- over its face.

Qiao Wu, chief development officer at EXDOLL, said the goal is to create the most beautiful and most human-like robot possible.

"There are already good robot technologies developed, so we want to concentrate on having a robot with the most beautiful face, and the hottest body," he said.

'Friends of dolls'
The company makes 400 custom dolls per month, up from 10 in 2009. It began research into sexbots in mid-2016 and now employs 120 people.

On the factory floor for "traditional" sex dolls, Wu points out that buyers can customise each doll for height, skin tone, breast size, amount of pubic hair, eye colour and hair colour.

However, the most popular dolls have pale skin, disproportionately swelled breasts and measure between 158 and 170 centimetres (five foot two and five foot seven) tall.

When asked whether smaller models are supposed to resemble children, Wu recoiled and said they were diminutive because some customers prefer "less heavy" and "more portable" dolls.

On Chinese social media, some say the products reinforce sexist stereotypes or endorse paedophilia.

"When sex robots become more technologically advanced, will men prefer to use them instead of respecting human wives?" one commenter on the Twitter-like Weibo platform wrote.

Others, calling themselves "friends of dolls", share user reviews and advice on dedicated online forums.

"The material is quite good, very soft to the touch. When I hold her I feel very comfortable," one anonymous user said in a review of a standard sex doll on e-commerce platform Taobao.

China is estimated to make more than 80 percent of the world's sex toys, with over a million people employed in the country's $6.6 billion industry.

Prominent Chinese feminist Xiao Meili thinks that some men will always have outdated expectations and "sex housewife robots" might actually help women.

"A lot of men want the same for women: sex, housework, childbirth and filial piety. They don't think of women as individuals," Xiao told AFP.

"If every nerd buys a sex doll for himself ... that would free a lot of women from these kind of men."

In that way, we are helping them. We are offering a life-altering facility.”

Some men have even started collecting the custom-made dolls, with one purchasing nine or ten dolls.

Customers can specify the dolls, that are made in China from rubber and plastic, have particular attributes, such as certain sized breasts and one requested the doll came with three.

Mr Tempest said: "We get a lot of people asking for three breasts.

"It's not something we do at the moment but in the future, perhaps, why not? There's a big thing for blue skin, too - because of the Avatar films."

Businessman Pieter Steenkamp* of Bedfordview in Johannesburg has forked out thousands of rands to buy a sex doll to satisfy himself sexually — and peacefully.

Steenkamp has developed a relationship with the doll and says he takes great care of her. "I respect her. I clean her and make sure she's happy at all times."

"I have had her for four weeks now. She has been amazing so far. My wife is a nag. I get tired of her nagging. I still have sex with her but not as much because she normally complains about fatigue. Madre doesn't," he says.

The 42-year-old says he would rather sleep with Madre than cheat and get attached. "I'm married in community of property, if I cheat and get caught, I have a lot to lose."

But could sex dolls, or high-tech sexbots, really help to curb infidelity? And, is having intercourse with a doll harmless fun, or should it be considered the same as cheating on your partner with a real woman?



Clinical sexologist Dr Eve says the creation of sexbots is artificial technology taken to a new level that terrifies her.

"Though they were created to enhance fantasy, I'm terrified by the idea. Here you are with someone so perfect, someone you can programme and make them have intimacy with you in the shape that you want, it is terrifying," she says.

"You have sex with them when you want; they don't have a say. We are currently facing problems on consent in marriages and relationships and these dolls are also going to programme men and women to think that in real life you can subject someone to such abuse."

When asked if sex dolls may be able to curb cheating, Dr Eve says absolutely not.

She says on the positive side, the dolls may be a good idea for those living with disabilities or who are incredibly shy.

"I'm not saying that they should not have sexual interaction with human beings; you have some people who are extremely shy and others whose physical challenges makes it difficult for them to have sexual relationships," she explains.

Another clinical sexologist Doctor Elna Rudolph says sex dolls are novelty items.

"I guess people had similar concerns when the first vibrators came out," she says. "Initially very few people used [them], now it is common practice. Sex dolls are of course not for everybody, but I do think they will become more and more popular."


She says the dolls and robots would never curb cheating, but they can enhance the sexual experience.

"The more senses a person can incorporate into a sexual act, the more intense the experience. A guy masturbating in the toilet using just his imagination is likely to have a much less intense experience than somebody having sex with a doll with a vagina that feels like a real one, where he can touch her boobs, smell her perfume and where she can even talk back to him."

Internet pornography has caused men to prefer robotic sex dolls rather than women, according to a man profiting off of this booming new industry.

The sex doll creator, identified only as “Brent,” made this remark to Ron Johnson on his podcast The Butterfly Effect.

“Part of the success for our company has been the overuse of pornography,” he said. Porn has perpetuated unrealistic expectations about women that causes them to turn to robotic dolls, like the ones created by Brent’s company 1amdollUSA, instead.

A member of staff at Lovedoll UK - which operated out of an industrial park in Gateshead - said: "The time we were given to move out of the business centre did not allow us to arrange transport, storage and a new premises, so we had to make the decision to pack up the existing stock and just ship it out.

"We did not want to have any downtime, so decided giving away free dolls would be a good way of keeping the business running. A lot of people in the business centre have genuinely been sad to see us go, we have been there for a long time and so you get attached.

"Some didn't even know what we did - but a very small percentage didn't like it when they found out through the press coverage."

Lovedoll UK claims it was only given 24 hours to clear out and bugger off from the premises that were rented from Bizspace - this was eventually lengthened to three days - which made the decision after finding that the company didn't fit in with their 'company values'.

"A lot of people don't know about the sex-doll industry, so it is important to get it out there."

Lifelike 60kg love dolls are booming after being imported into South Africa for the first time ever.

In just 10 days every single silicone model has flown out the shop window at R16,000 (£1,000).

And the sudden frenzy has sparked a rush of orders for more dolls to be imported – with 45 due this month alone.

Just six JY Dolls were initially ordered by South Africa sex toy firm LuvLand in December to test demand.

Operations manager Patrick Meyer said at the time: "We were in China in October, where I ordered six of them.









“They were delivered a few weeks later and now we've only got one left. I've got another 45 coming in January.”

A month later and they have all sold out, and so Meyer has just ordered 100 more.

The JY Doll is “lifelike” as it weighs as much as a real woman and is made of a "thermoplastic elastomer material" which means she feels more "real”.

They can be altered to lie in any position, but Meyer thinks the dolls’ appeal go much beyond sex.

“It’s a big market and they cost between R16 000 and R25 000,” Meyer said.



“It’s basically like a love doll and is built or moulded on real women weighing about 60kg.

"It’s like having someone to communicate with. Some people put them in their kitchens or lounges and have conversations with them.

“For men who are disabled, for instance, it’s a way for them to have a sex life, or for men who are more socially withdrawn and lacking in confidence – they seem to be the ones who are most drawn to sex dolls.”

But Sorika de Swardt – a social worker who specialises in mental health, addiction and complicated marriages – is less positive about the sudden demand for sex dolls in South Africa.

She fears men will eventually prefer sex with robots over humans, with scary results.





“Our sexual egos are fragile things. The moment we take our clothes off in front of someone, we also expose our vulnerability,” she said.

"We want to please and be pleased, but many of us struggle to verbalise what we actually want from the sexual experience.

“As a result of this lack of open and honest discussion around intimacy, relationships and sex in the real world, we tend to opt for any easier way to get our needs met.”

She added: “There will be no consequences for the owner who abuses or degrades the sexbots. We can already see the objectifying trend when we look at social-media responses [about the doll].”

Yet De Swardt admits that despite her fears, the dolls have finally arrived on the South African market and are there to stay.

“While still flooded in controversy, sex robots are a natural evolution of the plastic sex doll industry, and of the combination of sex and technology,” she said.

Luvland recently became the first adult franchise in South Africa to import and sell the JYDOLL, a variant of the life-sized sex dolls that have the international adult industry aflutter. HIGH-TECH BEDROOM COMPANIONS

Advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies have turned sex bots and dolls into the hottest new buzzword in the adult industry. Gone are the days when you had to attach an air pump to your lover. Now, depending on your budget, she could moan, crack jokes and potentially even read you the news.


Harmony is the latest brand ambassador for this next generation of sex toys. She's essentially an animatronic sex toy in parts. Her brain is an Android app developed by Realbotix. In this form she lives on whatever device you decide to download her onto. She makes jokes, answers questions and loudly wonders about the size of your penis.


The second piece of the Harmony puzzle is provided by a US sex-doll company called Real Doll. It, in conjunction with Realbotix, is putting the finishing touches to a vessel for Harmony's mind. Said vessel will have eyes and mouth that move and, eventually, cameras that are able to track movement and sound. She won't be as good at sex as a real woman, but for her creators the goal is to create a companion.


In an interview with technology news website Engadget, Matt MacMullen, the CEO of Real Doll, said: "What initially seemed like the Ferrari of sex devices proved to be something more for the people who actually buy them. They have sort of become companions and what I started to notice is that people sort of started imposing personalities on their dolls."

It was not a large jump from people imposing personalities in their sex dolls to giving the dolls actual personalities, among other things.


"It is engineered in such a way that it is going to learn from the different interactions that it has," he said, outlining the fact that each person will have a different version of the doll depending on how one sets up its customisable personality and how one engages with it from that point.

"People have asked me if I'm asking the dolls to replace women and that has really never even been on the radar. It's an alternative form of relationship, that's all."

As much of a focus as personality is, the sex dolls of the future are still going to have enough sex gadgetry on them to make that old blowup doll in your cupboard look like a telegram machine.

It is expected that in the very near future - think before the next Olympics - animatronic sex toys will be equipped with self-lubricating vaginas, heat and touch sensors and all manner of doohickeys to make the sensation as real as possible.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

The Harmonys and Tiffanys of the world may only be approximations of real women, but their arrival has stirred up a number of serious questions about their potential effects on the lives of real women.

Dr Kathleen Richardson, a senior research fellow in the ethics of robotics at De Montford University in the UK, is concerned that the increased sophistication of robots that are essentially non-human sex slaves could have dangerous side-effects for our value systems.

In an article in the London Telegraph she said: "If you didn't have prostitution, you couldn't have the idea of a sex robot or a sex doll. They are an outcome of a way of reflecting on a human person as if they were a thing."


This concern birthed a campaign called "Campaign Against Sex Robots", which argues against the development of robots or AI that mirrors, reproduces or contributes to current gender inequalities.

Richardson is not alone and there is currently a running back and forth concerning the ethics of sex robots that encompasses everything from whether robots can have rights to whether or not it even matters if robots are slaves. After all, they were made to serve us, right?

For many people however, sex dolls are neither the topic of a third-year philosophy class nor are they toys. Luvland's Meyer, for instance, is quick to claim that the majority of the dolls he brought into South Africa have been bought by disabled people and others who, for whatever medical reasons, may struggle to have sex with a real woman. Having a quippy robot can also be therapeutic for people with social anxiety disorders.

That said, there is a debate going on about the merits of sex dolls for paedophiles. As discomforting to read as it is, there are sex dolls that mimic the dimensions of young girls. Some of the smallest of them stand at 100cm tall, weigh 12kg and have a 58cm chest - the dimensions of a five- or six-year-old.


The argument for their production essentially states that if you provide a doll for that kind of deviancy then you help keep real children safe. For many that argument is thin at best.

It is not a road Meyer is interested in walking down. "We absolutely won't touch those or anything near those sizes. They are also banned in the UK," he says.

Like all things sex-related, the rise of sex dolls and bots tickles us in all the right spots. It is a bit like looking in a quirky circus mirror only to start noticing scary shapes behind you when you look too hard.

Much like many of the current debates around virtually everything robotic, sex bots are talking a big game but standing beneath a sign that looks suspiciously like "Underdelivery". The hyper-realistic sex dolls are crafted from thermoplastic elastomer – a polymer known to be especially soft. Since opening in February, the brothel amassed complaints from just about everyone, including local residents, city officials and even the Association of Sex Professionals (Aprosex) who said: ‘The sex-affection of a person can not be provided by a doll. They are different and compatible services. ‘They do not communicate. They do not listen to you or caress you, they do not comfort you or look at you. They do not give you their opinion or drink a glass of champagne with you.‘ Police raided LumiDolls’ premises only to find that the company had packed up and moved on.

It has since relocated and reopened in a secret location and the website is still active, although Prieto is a little more cagey when it comes to specifics about the brothel’s clientele. ‘We cannot provide this information,’ he says in answer to my questions, although he does concede that they have visitors every day – many of whom are British. ‘In Barcelona, we serve many UK clients. Many come to Barcelona just for LumiDolls.’ In fact, us Brits are apparently so keen for the LumiDolls experience that the company is looking to set up shop on our doorstep. ‘We are in contact with several UK businessmen,’ Prieto tells me. ‘We are looking for a specific profile with sufficient resources to be able to develop the business in an optimal way. ‘This requires important financial muscle but we believe that success in UK is guaranteed.’ He continued: ‘It has generated a lot of expectation and many customers have expressed their wish to have a LumiDolls UK already.’

I could go on. This is where I struggle with LumiDolls’ service. On the one hand, I take a live-and-let-live approach: if men want to pay to get their sexual kicks from a plastic doll, so be it – who are they hurting? Yet for all the claims of ‘hyper-realism’, LumiDolls are not like any woman I have ever seen. They have impossibly tiny waists, comically big breasts and inflated lips – they are life-size Barbie dolls. Their faces are either expressionless (one of the dolls available to buy, Emily, horrifyingly appears to have her eyes permanently closed) or painted with coy little smiles, unable to express displeasure. Mostly, they just look sad. They have no cellulite, no morning breath, no conversation – no demands. The majority has been designed to look young – and we are talking young young. If these dolls reflect the future of sex, it’s a pretty depressing vision.

Schwarz came up with the idea for Bordoll - a portmanteau of the words "bordello" (brothel) and "doll" - while working on a project connected to the S&M scene.


She said: "Actually I was looking for colleagues with good knowledge of German for the S&M scene, because for these practices communication is very important. But I did not find any."

According to media reports, sex industry experts estimate that people with a fetish for sex dolls are a growing group, and that they expect more dolls to be made available by brothels.

Whether your Valentine's Day was good or bad probably had something to do with whether your partner lived up to expectations. Every relationship has that issue to some degree, but there is a group of men who have taken unpredictability out of the picture. They're the guys who date sex dolls.

Sex dolls are generally held to be dead-eyed female mockeries, and the men who use them are assumed to be lonely perverts pounding away at plastic orifices. But The Doll Forum, an online community home to over 18,000 members, presents a different view of doll owners—or "Doll Lovers" as they preferred to be called. For them it's less about sex and more about companionship. They're people who prefer the dolls for reasons ranging from social anxieties to simply feeling they're a partner they can really rely on.

A poll conducted on The Doll Forum showed that 50 percent of dolls were bought for non-sexual reasons, with seven percent saying it was just to cuddle and sleep with them, and 11 percent admitting they prefer dolls as a replacement for a human.

"My two girls go to bed with me at night and I wake up to them in the morning," doll-owner Lemm told VICE. "When I come home they're both there, sitting and smiling, waiting for me patiently. There's no drama or pain, only nurturing and acceptance."

Lemm felt his relationship with the two dolls Nunoko Hara and Kylie Sutula originated from childhood trauma. "I was that fat kid in the neighbourhood, and was made fun of," he explained. "Instead of lashing out at people, I became really introverted. I began creating a world of imaginary friends to keep me company, and I suppose this is why I'm enamoured by human replicas".

Nunoko is an Akiko plush model with a "wild side", while Kylii is a 65-pound "Private Island Beauty" who Lemm confided is a homage to his ex wife. "She is very special to me, because she represents a salvaged image of her. I blame myself for the destruction of that marriage, I was foolish and careless."

Among the men VICE spoke to, a prevalent theme was using dolls to replicate human presence. One doll-owner who called himself Mandy said he doesn't even think of his two girls as sex dolls, but more as "adult daughters" instead – a substitute family. "I would like to have a human companion," he admitted, "but I find dating too stressful. I'm impotent with prostate issues, and if I marry I'll lose retirement benefits—telling that to a real woman won't go down well."

These life-sized women aren't just aids to masturbation, but also to loneliness. Many men come home and talk to their dolls, enjoy their companionship and admit to having a real emotional kinship with them.

Puma Uma – owner of a doll he calls Maria – said that while he's fully aware she isn't a real person, her presence is therapeutic and makes him happy. "It's like when a husband has his wife and kids come home, you know, I have that; I have someone at home". Puma Uma confided the days he spends with Maria were usually some of his best – spending time dressing her in outfits, cuddling on the couch and maybe watching a movie together. "It's that fantasy, you know, of having that kind of girlfriend. I've never had that experience".


Similar to the other men, Puma Uma's situation stems from complications growing up. "I've had a lot of anxiety in my life, and its difficult with real women," he said. "I had a breakdown a while ago, and have had Maria for about a month and it's been fun. It's like a middle ground – you have someone, but you know you really don't".

Dr. Gabriel Rusu, a Melbourne-based psychologist told VICE that despite the unusual nature of these human-doll relationships, he would not dissuade them if they were content.

"Who am I to say what is right? In my profession, I go with what the patient needs," Dr Rusu explained. "I go with whether they are disturbed or bothered by their habits. Guiding by my own personal judgment is not necessarily good in my profession."

Sex dolls are realistically never going to be viewed as a totally acceptable form of sexual and emotional expression, and enthusiasts do accept this. When asked about the stereotypes surrounding the dolls, Puma Uma said the "bad reputation" given to doll owners was to demean them. "People call us perverts, freaks, sex addicts or rapists," he said. "But people have dolls for different reasons, and just because you don't understand why, doesn't mean you can judge us".
